Water

Introduction

Of course a river is first and foremost defined by the presence of water and gravity's pull on that water, which makes it flow down the valley. The force of water's weight is enough for it to carve into the underlying soil to make a channel. Over time, the size and shape of the channel will depend on the interplay between the water's flow regime (i.e., how the water supply changes through time), the sediment supply regime from upstream sources, valley topography, and vegetation. People also tend to manipulate rivers for a variety of purposes, such as to extract resources, protect adjacent lands, and control location and access.
